Quarrying is the work of cutting stone, or taking sand and rock, out of the ground at a quarry — a big open hole in a hillside. People quarry marble, granite, limestone. The word is the -ing form of the verb quarry: they are quarrying the mountain. It can also name the job itself: quarrying is noisy and dusty. You meet it in geography, news about building, and history. Though actually, English has another quarry that means the animal you are hunting. Quarrying in that hunting sense is rare; almost always this word means digging stone.
