    This word has two meanings that aren't related. First, a quail is a small, round bird, a bit like a tiny chicken — people sometimes eat quail meat, and quail eggs are a popular snack, especially in Asian cooking. Second, as a verb, "to quail" means to suddenly feel afraid and pull back, as if your courage disappears for a moment: "he quailed at the sight of his angry boss." This verb use is old-fashioned and shows up mostly in stories, not daily talk.
