A quadrille is a dance that was very popular in the 1800s. Four pairs of dancers stand in a square and move through a set of steps together. It belonged to ballrooms and fine parties more than to a village green, though country versions existed. You will meet it in old novels, in films set in that time, and in the names of old pieces of music. The French word first meant a small group of knights; English later used it for this square dance. There is also an old card game with the same name, and a riding display — same family of “square / four” — but the meaning you need here is the dance. People do not dance a quadrille at a normal party now.
