When someone pretends to be a doctor, or sells “medicine” that does not work, we call that whole activity quackery. It is not one lie. It is the job they make of lying — the bottles, the posters, the big talk, the taking of money from people who feel ill and afraid. The person is a quack; quackery is what they do. Newspapers still use it. People also stretch it to other kinds of fake expertise (“diet quackery”), but the first home of the word is medicine. It is a hard, word. You say it when you think someone is a cheat, not merely a doctor who made a mistake.
