The QE2 was a famous passenger ship owned by the Cunard company. Her written name is Queen Elizabeth 2 — with the ordinary number 2, not the Roman numbers II. She used to carry people between Southampton in southern England and New York, and she also took them on long holiday trips by sea, called cruises. It was a grand, expensive way to travel: nice rooms, nice food, a hotel that moved. In 2008 she stopped sailing. She later became a hotel that stays still, in Dubai. People who love ships talk about her as if she were a person, and they say “she.” Cunard has long said the 2 is for the second ship with that name, not for Elizabeth the Second — though many passengers have always heard it the other way.
