Pythagoras was a Greek from around the 500s BC. The dates have question marks because so much of his life is story as well as record. School remembers him as a , especially for Pythagoras' Theorem: in a triangle with one square corner (90°), if you know the two shorter sides, you can work out the long side. He was also a philosopher, and his followers treated him rather like a holy teacher, with rules about food and number. Though actually, we cannot be sure which bits of “his” maths he found himself and which his students later put under his name. still give him the theorem.
