The Pyrenees are a long range of mountains between France and Spain. They run from the Bay of Biscay on the Atlantic side all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, so for much of the border they really do stand like a wall between the two countries. People ski there, walk there, and say the Pyrenees the way they say the Alps — a place-name, always plural, almost always with the. Though actually, a tiny country, , sits in these mountains too; it is easy to forget when you only name France and Spain. The high parts are wild, and the weather can change fast.

組成From Middle English Pireneies, partly from Middle French Pyrenees and partly from Latin Pȳrēnaeī (montēs), “Pyrenean mountains”, from Ancient Greek Πυρηναῖος, from Πῡρήνη (Pūrḗnē, “Pyrene”, literally “fruit-stone”) + -αῖος. In the old myth, Pyrene was a daughter of King Bebryx. Heracles loved her or treated her very badly; she fled into the wild and died, and he buried her. The mountains were said to take her name.
