A pyre is a high pile of wood built for one job: to burn a dead body at a funeral. The body is laid on top, then the wood is set alight. It is an old, rather word; you meet it in history, myth, and news from places where this kind of funeral still happens. It is not a , and it is not a at a party. Those are for warmth or fun. A pyre is for the dead. Though actually, newspapers sometimes stretch it — a pyre of old files — as a dark joke about burning paperwork. In careful talk, keep it for the funeral pile.
