When English speakers say the Pyramids, they almost always mean the huge stone tombs in Egypt, not just any building with sides. Old Egyptian kings, called , had them built to hold their bodies and the things they wanted with them after death — food, furniture, gold. The sides rise to a point; from far away they look like giant, very tidy hills of stone. The three at , near Cairo, are the famous ones, and the Great Pyramid is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — the only Wonder you can still go and stand in front of. Though actually, other lands built pyramid-shaped tombs too, especially in Mexico, and a small-p pyramid can be a diagram or a pile of fruit. With a capital P and the word the, English still points to Egypt.
組成English took this from Greek pyramis, a name for this kind of building. Some scholars think the Greek word may go back to Egyptian; that part is not settled. What English did with it is clearer: pyramid is the shape or one building, and the Pyramids is the Egyptian group treated as a place-name.
