PYO on a farm sign means pick your own. You go into the field, pick strawberries, apples, or pumpkins yourself, then pay for the weight (or the box) when you leave. It is countryside, family, weekend English — more Britain, Ireland, and some parts of America than city talk. Farms write PYO because it is short and fits on a painted board: PYO strawberries. You almost never say the three letters in a normal sentence; you say pick-your-own, or we are going strawberry picking. In Taiwan the same outing is already familiar as 採草莓、採果; the letters are just how those farms write it on the gate. Though actually, PYO fruit is not always cheaper. You are paying for the afternoon as much as for the fruit.
