1. 1

A puttee is a long strip of cloth that soldiers, especially in the late 1800s and the First World War, wrapped round each leg from the knee down to the boot. It was part of the uniform. It kept mud and stones out, held the trousers in, and supported the back of the lower leg. British and Indian army soldiers are the ones in most old photos. The word came into English from Hindi, where it meant a strip of cloth or a . Nobody wears puttees as regular kit now; you meet the word in history, museums, and old war stories. Though actually, it is easy to hear “put” in it and invent an English story; for this wrapping, the Hindi cloth-word is the one that holds. It is not putty, the soft paste used on windows, and it is not a kind of boot.
