    In golf, to putt is to tap the ball softly so it rolls along the short, smooth grass toward the hole. You do this on the green, close to the hole — not when you send the ball a long way from far off. The stroke itself is also called a putt: she sank a long putt. use the word all the time; it is ordinary in that world, not fancy. A putter is the special club for this, or the person doing it. Though actually, people stretch it a little: putt around can mean to play a bit of easy golf, and putt-putt can mean mini-golf. The little engine sound putt-putt is a different, copy-the-noise word, not this one. And this is not the everyday verb put (to place something). Different word, different sound.

組成Borrowed from Scots putt (“to put”). Compare Middle Dutch putten (“to dig a pit”). People used to derive it from Old English putian (“to push; thrust; put; place”), but that story is no longer accepted. Dutch used the word in a description of golf in an early 1600s schoolbook by Pieter van Afferden. Noun and verb share the same story. All of these sit on Proto-Germanic *putōną.
