Putrefaction is the rotting of a dead body, or of dead plant matter, when it breaks down and smells very, very bad. Tiny living things eat the dead tissue and give off gases that stink. Doctors, , and crime writers use this word; in ordinary talk people just say rotting or decay. Though actually, not every kind of decay is putrefaction. This word is for the wet, kind — the kind you get when a body or a dead animal lies in heat with little fresh air — not for a dry leaf slowly turning to dust, and not for food that is only a little off. It is a formal, almost scientific noun. It names the process, not a person.
