A put-on is something you say or do to make someone believe what is not true. It may be a joke that goes on a little too long, a fake story, a fake accent, a fake face of surprise. When the truth comes out, you say it was a put-on. The word is informal, and you will hear it more in American English. Though actually, put on as a verb also means to dress (put on a coat) and to pretend (put on a brave face). The noun here is the act of fooling, the trick itself. It is lighter than fraud in court. As an adjective, a put-on smile is a smile that is not real — same family of meaning, a slightly different job in the sentence. This entry is the trick: the thing done so that someone will believe a lie.
