A put-down is something you say that is meant to make another person feel stupid or . It can be a sharp joke, a cold compliment, or a little remark that leaves someone smaller than they were a second before. Well, that was ambitious can be a put-down if the voice is cruel. The word is informal. It was cut from the verb to put someone down. Though actually, the same spelling put down does other jobs in English: you put down a bag, you put down a number, and, sadly, you put down a very sick animal. Those are not this noun. A put-down is social: it is talk used as a pin. People also stretch it to looks and sighs, but the core is words with an intent to you.
這個名詞指說出來要讓別人覺得自己很笨、很不重要的話。它可以是尖銳的玩笑，也可以是冷冰冰的讚美，像例句 「Well, that was ambitious」 那樣，如果語氣很狠，就是一句損人的話。它是口語用法，從動詞片語 「put someone down」 變成的。
