If something is purportedly true, that is the story being offered — someone claims it — and you are not putting your own name on that story. The word quietly says: this is what is said, and it may not be so. A man is purportedly a doctor (that is the claim; you have not checked). A painting is purportedly from the eighteenth century. It is a careful, slightly formal adverb, common in news and in any talk where you do not want to swallow a claim whole. It is cooler than supposedly, which can already sound as if you think the claim is thin; purportedly just holds the claim at arm’s length. You use it when the claiming is the point, not when you yourself are sure.
