A punnet is a small, usually square or rectangular open box for soft fruit — strawberries, raspberries, cherries — so they can be sold and carried without being crushed. It is everyday British (and also Australian) shop English. In a UK supermarket you buy a punnet of strawberries; the material may be cardboard, plastic, or a light moulded tray. The word is not common in American English, where people more often say a box or a basket of berries. Though actually, a punnet is not a picnic basket and not a closed carton of juice; it is a small open punnet you can see the fruit in. The origin is uncertain. It first appears in the 1820s. It is perhaps a diminutive of pun, a dialect form of pound (the weight), plus -et. It is not named after the geneticist Reginald Punnett, who grew strawberries much later — that story does not fit the dates. A link to French bannette (a small wicker basket) has been suggested; that is possible, not proven. Empty certainty is better than a tidy wrong story.
