The Punjab is a large region in eastern Pakistan and northwestern India, named for five rivers. Under British rule it was one province; today it is split. Pakistani Punjab has the great city of Lahore; Indian Punjab has Amritsar, a holy city for Sikhs. Many people in Indian Punjab are Sikhs, and Punjabi is the language of the region on both sides of the border. The name is a place-name, so we write Punjab with a capital P. Though actually, people sometimes talk as if Punjab were a country of its own, or as if it existed only in India. It is a region, not a UN country, and a large part of it is in Pakistan. Food, music, and farming (especially wheat) are a big part of how the word is used in everyday talk — 'Punjabi food' — not only maps and history. Some political talk about the Indian side has included Sikh hopes for more self-rule; that is real and sensitive, so it is better named carefully than flattened into a tourist label.
