A pundit is someone who is asked, again and again, to give a public opinion — on TV, in a newspaper, on the radio — about , sport, money, or whatever the news is that week. They explain, they guess what will happen next, and they sound sure. The word is ordinary in news English; it is not a rude word, but it is not a warm compliment either. It names the job: the talking expert. Though actually, a pundit can be wrong quite often; the point is that they are the person with the microphone, not that they know the future. English borrowed the word from Hindi and , from paṇḍita, a learned person or teacher. In India, pandit is still a title for a scholar or priest; the English news word pundit has moved over to the TV-and-column meaning. Younger viewers may just say 'that guy on the news'; pundit is the slightly name for the same role.
