A pulpit is the raised box or platform inside a church where a priest or minister stands to speak to the people. It sits higher than the seats, so the speaker can be seen and heard. The word belongs first to church buildings, and it still feels churchy. People also stretch it: to speak “from the pulpit” can mean to preach, even away from church. In American a “bully pulpit” is a public job that lets you push an idea hard — though actually that does not mean a pulpit for bullies; bully here is an old way of saying “excellent.” You would not call a classroom desk a pulpit unless you were joking that the teacher was preaching.
