Doctors use pulmonary when they mean “about the lungs” — not the heart, and not breathing in a loose everyday way, but the lungs themselves. A pulmonary disease is a lung disease; the pulmonary artery is the blood vessel that carries blood to the lungs. You will mostly meet this word in hospitals, textbooks, and health news. It is a formal medical word; ordinary people more often just say lung. Though actually it stays quite narrow even in careful speech: cardiac is the heart, pulmonary is the lungs, and the two sit next to each other in the chest, which is why mix them up.

組成From Latin pulmōnārius (“of the lungs”), from pulmō (“lung”) + -ārius (“belonging to”). That Latin lung-word goes back to an old root that also gave French poumon (“lung”).
