A Pullman is a very comfortable railway carriage, or a whole train made of such carriages — historically the luxury kind, with proper seats or sleeping berths, far nicer than ordinary coaches. The name is an ellipsis of Pullman car, after the Pullman Palace Car Company, named for the American engineer George Pullman (1831–1897), who built famous sleeping cars in the 1800s.
