Pulchritude is a very formal, almost show-off noun for physical beauty — how beautiful a person looks, the beauty of the body and face. You will almost never hear it in ordinary talk. When people do use it, they are often smiling, because the word itself sounds heavy and not pretty, which is a joke everyone notices. It came into English from Latin pulchritūdō, from pulcher, “beautiful.” The words people actually say are beauty, good looks, or she’s beautiful. This one lives in literature, quizzes, and knowing, slightly teasing writing. It is about looks, not a beautiful idea or a beautiful song, though a playful writer might stretch it.
