Pukka means real, properly made, and of good quality — not fake, not half-done, not a cheap copy. A pukka curry is the genuine thing; a pukka builder does the job properly. It is strongly British and informal, a stamp of approval. British English borrowed it from Hindi, Punjabi and pakkā, where it means ripe, cooked-through, solid, sure — the opposite of something raw or unfinished. That goes back to pakva, “baked, cooked,” from a verb meaning to cook or roast. In South Asian English it can still carry that “solid / properly done” feel. In Britain it became everyday slang; the chef Jamie Oliver made it widely heard. Americans almost never say it, so it can puzzle them. Older colonial English had pukka sahib for a “proper” gentleman — that use feels dated now, and a bit uncomfortable, because it belongs to the British Raj. Spell it pukka, not (that is your mouth).
