If something is pukey, it is so unpleasant or that it turns your stomach a little — a colour, a smell, a face, a room. It is not a calm word for ugly. It carries a sick feeling, because it comes from puke (to vomit) plus -y, so the idea is “like something that would make you sick.” People also stretch it: a pukey green, a pukey outfit, a pukey comment. It is very informal, the sort of thing teenagers and casual speakers throw around. You would not put it in a school essay or a polite email. In American English, gross does a lot of the same work; pukey is understood, but it can sound a bit British or childish. Though actually, it does not only mean “about to be sick.” That is the older, more literal feeling. The sense you will meet most is “ — I don’t like how that looks or feels.”
