1. 1

Puce is a colour: a dark purple that leans toward brown, like a , dried blood, or red wine that has gone a bit muddy. It is not bright purple and not quite maroon. You meet it in fashion, paint charts, and careful writing; in everyday talk people are more likely to say brownish purple. Though actually, the French name means flea colour, from Latin pulex, a flea. Some people say it was the colour of a crushed flea. That is an ugly picture, but it is why the word exists, and it explains why puce is never a clean, pretty violet. It is almost only ever a colour word.
