A publicist is someone whose job is to make sure people notice a person, a film, a book, a product, or a piece of news. They phone journalists, set up interviews, send out photos and stories, and try to keep a name in the papers for the right reasons. Film companies and famous people often keep one on staff, or hire one when something new is about to appear. The work sits next to public relations; in a small office the same person may do both, though a publicist is usually the one pushing a particular face or title rather than the whole company. It is an ordinary job word — not slang, not especially stiff. Though actually, it is not a publisher (the person or firm that prints and sells books) and not a (in British English, the person who runs a pub). Those just look related.
