A public-spirited person is willing to do things that help everyone, not only themselves or their own family. They might pick up rubbish in the park, give time to a neighbourhood group, or stand up for a fair rule even when it costs them a little. It is a compliment, and it is a little formal: you see it in newspapers, speeches, and school remarks more than in chat. Though actually, it does not mean famous, and it does not mean “a public person.” A quiet neighbour who always helps can be public-spirited; a loud politician might not be. The spirit here is the attitude — you have a public spirit, a feeling that other people’s good matters. Younger speakers often just say they care about the community. The word is the old, tidy label for that same kindness.
