    Psi has two very different uses. In science and engineering, "psi" is a unit for measuring pressure — it stands for "pounds per square inch," and you'll see it most often when checking how much air is in a tire or a ball ("inflate to 32 psi"). Separately, "psi" is also the name of a Greek letter (Ψ, ψ), used in math, physics, and other technical fields as a symbol. It's also sometimes used , especially in science fiction, to talk about "psi powers" — imagined mental powers like reading minds — though this fictional sense is much less exact and just borrows the Greek letter's mysterious feel.

    • Each turbogenerator consisted of a steam turbine, powered by 900 psi of superheated steam, that was coupled by a set of reduction gears to a General Electric marine alternating-current generator operating at 1,800 rpm. Each generator had a capacity of 2,000 kilowatts of three-phase power at 450 volts and 60 hertz. The main 450-volt switchboard was energized by the two turbogenerators. The emergency switchboard, in the emergency generator room, was fed from the main switchboard through an electrical tie.
