The PSAT is a test that many students in the United States take in high school to get ready for the SAT, the bigger exam some US colleges look at. It is usually taken in the third year of high school, around age 17, though some students sit it a year earlier as practice. The letters stand for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test; you will also see it called the Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Students who do very well may be in line for a National Merit Scholarship. It is a US school thing. In Taiwan you mainly hear about it if someone is aiming at a US university — it is not a local exam, and it is not the SAT itself, only the practice-and-scholarship version that comes first.
