A proxy is a person or thing that acts on behalf of someone else, standing in for them. If you can't vote at a meeting in person, you might give someone else the right to vote for you — that person is your proxy, and 'voting by proxy' is a set phrase for this. In computers and the internet, a 'proxy' (or proxy server) is a middle computer that passes your requests along for you, often used to hide your location or get around blocks.
