The prow is the pointed front of a ship or boat, the part that cuts through the water. Sailors in ordinary work more often say bow. Prow sounds a little older or more literary — the kind of word you meet in stories, poems, and careful description. People sometimes stretch it to the front of other things that move, but its home meaning is the ship’s front. It is not about pride, and it is not about creeping around at night, even though prowess, proud, and prowl look nearby on the page.
