This is the name of a book in the Bible, in the Old Testament. It is not one long story. It is a collection of short, wise sayings — little lines people remember and pass on, about how to live well, how to be honest, how to stay out of trouble, and what happens when you do not. People have long said King Solomon wrote them. Though actually, many of the sayings may have been gathered over a long time, not all from one person on one day; “Solomon” is the name the tradition puts on the book. You write it with a capital P when you mean this book. With a small p, proverbs are just wise sayings in general, anywhere, not this one volume. In church, in literature class, and when someone quotes a famous line, they mean the book.
