Provenance is the story of where something originally came from, and sometimes of whose hands it passed through later. Art dealers and museums care about it a great deal: a painting with a clear provenance is easier to trust. Cooks and shops use it for food — which farm, which sea, which country. Scientists may ask for the provenance of a sample. It is a formal noun; in ordinary talk you would just say where it came from. Though actually, once you are buying old furniture or expensive tea, provenance is the word people expect. It is not a place on the map.
