A protester is a person who goes out in public to show they are against something — a law, a war, a company, a government plan. They may march, hold signs, shout, sit in the road, or stand outside a building. This is everyday news English, not a fancy word. It names the person at the event; the event itself is a protest or a demonstration. Though actually, demonstrator is very close, and activist is wider: an activist works on an issue over a long time, while a protester is there on the day, in the crowd. American spelling usually prefers protester; protestor appears too, but less often.
