A protectorate is a country that a stronger country says it will protect — and, in real life, also controls. The weaker country may keep its own name and some of its own rulers, but the powerful country decides the big questions, especially war, defence, and dealing with other states. It is a history and word, much used by empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The name sounds kinder than colony, as if the big country were only a guard. Though actually, the power gap is the point: the protecting country is in charge. Do not hear protect here as simple kindness.
