    Prosthetic names an artificial body part that takes the place of a missing one — a leg, a tooth, a hand — the same idea as . In careful medical talk it is first an adjective (a prosthetic leg, a prosthetic tooth), and people also use it as a noun, especially for a limb: “she wears a prosthetic.” That noun use is a shorter, more everyday shape of the same meaning. Film workers stretch it further: “prosthetics” can mean a fake nose, ear, or piece of skin built for an actor. That is still an added body part, but for a story, not for walking. Though actually, in real conversation the adjective and the noun keep mixing, and that is normal.
