Prophylaxis is a treatment you have so that you do not get sick, or so that a sickness does not come back — not a treatment you have because you are already ill. Doctors use it for medicine, injections, or a planned course of care given in advance. Pills before a trip to stop malaria, medicine after an operation to stop infection, or a dentist's cleaning to keep gum trouble away can all be prophylaxis. Though actually, the tidy idea is prevention, but in hospitals the word is narrower than eat well and sleep. It means a planned medical step against a known risk. It is a doctor's word. Ordinary people say to prevent or they name the treatment. You may also meet prophylactic for the same idea; in some places that word also means a condom, but prophylaxis itself stays in the medical register.
