A propagandist is a person who makes or spreads propaganda: information that is false, or that shows only one part of a situation, used by a government or political group to make people agree with them. The word names the person, not the message. Newspapers and history books use it for the writer, speaker, or official whose job is to push that story. It is almost never a compliment; if you call someone a propagandist, you are saying their “information” is a tool. It can also describe a thing: propagandist art, a propagandist speech — meaning the thing itself is doing that job. Though actually, the person wearing the word often believes they are simply teaching, warning, or telling the truth; it is usually other people who pin this name on them. It is a fairly formal, news-and-history word, a little cold. Friends in the would more likely say “they’re trying to sell us an idea.”
