The Proms are a long summer run of classical concerts in London, most at the Royal Albert Hall. Sir Henry Wood began them in 1895, and they are a well-known piece of British life. The name comes from promenade concerts: part of the hall has no seats, so more people can come, pay less, and stand. Young people especially pack that standing floor. The Last Night of the Proms is the noisy, flag-waving night many people see on television — though actually the weeks before it are the real body of the festival, concert after concert. In British English, the Proms with a capital P means this series, not a school dance.
