In Greek myth, Prometheus was one of the Titans, the older gods who came before Zeus’s generation fully took over. He stole fire from heaven and gave it to human beings, which is why people can cook, keep warm, and make tools. Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock, where an eagle ate his liver by day — and the liver grew back by night, so the pain never ended — until Hercules (Heracles) set him free. His name is from Greek pró, “before,” and manthánō, “to think”: something like “forethought,” the one who thinks ahead. People still reach for this story when they talk about a gift of knowledge or technology that comes with a price. Though actually, he is not a war hero who wins a battle; he is a giver who then suffers, and that is why the tale still feels uneasy rather than simply brave.
