Prolific describes someone or something that produces a lot, again and again. A prolific writer publishes many books; a prolific painter makes painting after painting. It is almost always a compliment about quantity — and often it hints that the quality stayed high too, which is part of why people are impressed. The word can also describe plants or animals that produce a lot of fruit, seeds, or babies, though the 'productive person' meaning is the one you will meet most often.
