Proliferation means a fast increase in the number of something - things multiplying quickly. You'll often meet this word in serious topics: the proliferation of nuclear weapons (more and more countries getting them), or the proliferation of smartphones (how quickly everyone started owning one). It's a formal word that usually points at growth some people are a little worried about, not just any ordinary increase.
