A prognostication is a statement about what you think will happen later — a forecast put into words, sometimes with a grave or tone. It can also mean the act of making that statement. You meet it in writing more than in chat: someone offers a gloomy prognostication about the harvest, the market, or a war. Though actually, a doctor's forecast of an illness is usually called a prognosis, not this word; and a wild claim with no care behind it is just a guess. Ordinary English is happy with prediction. This noun sounds a little older and heavier.
