A pro-am is a competition, especially in golf, for professionals (people who play for money) and amateurs (people who play for pleasure). Very often a pro and an amateur play as a pair, and the day may raise money for charity. You see Pro-Am on posters and in sports news; the word is informal in a sporty way, not a classroom word. It can name the event (we played in the pro-am) or describe it (a pro-am tournament). Though actually, other sports borrow it too — tennis, cycling, — but golf still owns it in most people's mouths. It is not 'professional American,' and it is not a person: a player is a pro or an amateur; the pro-am is the meeting of the two.
pro-am 是比賽的名稱，多見於高爾夫，把職業選手和業餘選手放在同一場比賽裡，常是兩人一組，活動有時也會為慈善募款。它帶著運動圈的輕鬆口氣，新聞和海報上很常見。它可以指比賽本身，例如 「we played in the pro-am」，也可以修飾比賽，例如 「a pro-am tournament」。
它不是 professional American 的縮寫，也不指某一個人。人是 pro 或 amateur，pro-am 指的則是兩者湊在一起的那個場合。
