A privet is a bush — a shrub — whose small leaves stay green all year. Gardeners plant many of them in a line and clip them into a living wall: a hedge between gardens, along a path, or in front of a house. It is ordinary, tidy, a bit dull if you are looking for flowers; people grow it because it is tough and it keeps its green. You hear the word most in British garden talk. It is not a tree, and it is not holly, though both stay green in winter. It also has nothing to do with the adjective private, even though the two look like cousins on the page.
