Pretentiously is how you do something when you are being — you speak, dress, write, or act in a way that tries to look more important, clever, or high-class than is true. You might speak pretentiously by choosing heavy, words for a simple idea. A restaurant might pretentiously: gold , a French name, and food that does not match the theatre. Though actually, people more often use the adjective () than this adverb. “That sounds ” is the everyday jab. Pretentiously turns up more in writing, or when someone is describing a manner — how a thing was done, not what it is. It is never praise. If you tell a student they spoke pretentiously, you are saying the show got in the way of the meaning.
