When you are pressed, you do not have enough of something you need — most often time or money. We almost always add for: pressed for time, pressed for money, pressed for space. Hard-pressed is a close cousin and sounds a bit stronger, as if life is really squeezing you. It is everyday English, a little informal, used by anyone who is rushing or short of cash. Though actually, pressed has many other lives — clothes can be pressed (ironed), fruit can be pressed, and a person can be pressed into doing something. This meaning is only the “not enough” one. Without for time or for money, “I am pressed” often sounds unfinished, unless you say hard-pressed.
