A presidium is a small group of people chosen to sit at the top of a large political organisation and speak for it. You meet the word most of all with communist states — the old Soviet Union had a Presidium, and news about China still uses the idea. It is formal, official language; nobody calls a school committee or a club committee a presidium. Though actually, the tidy picture of “the people in charge” hides something: a presidium is not one leader. It is a table of leaders, and the real power may sit with one person inside that group, or with someone whose name is not even on it. Do not mix it up with president, which is one person.
組成Borrowed from Russian прези́диум (prezídium), from Latin praesidium, a garrison or a body that sits out in front to protect. Doublet of praesidium and presidio.
