Present-day means “of now” — the world as it is, not as it was. We usually put it before a noun: present-day English, present-day Taipei, present-day science.

Present-day means意思是 “of now”「現在的」—— the world世界 as it is現在的樣子， not as it was不是從前的樣子。 We我們 usually通常 put it把它放在 before a noun名詞前面： present-day English當今的英語、 present-day Taipei現今的台北、 present-day science當今的科學。

It is a calm, slightly formal way to say “today’s.” Though actually, it is not quite the same as modern. Modern can name a whole era (modern art, modern history, which may already be a hundred years old). Present-day is narrower: this period we are living in.

It is an adjective, and it keeps the hyphen when it sits in front of a noun. “The present day” (with the) is a noun phrase meaning now; “present-day” is the describing word. You would not say “This building is present-day” as freely as “This is a present-day building”; after the noun, current or modern often sounds more natural.

Nothing here is a gift. That present is a different word that only looks the same.
